In the last discussion, I talked about repentance. There are two purposes for repentance. I discussed that repentance is simply turning around. While turning around sounds simple, I have not always found it easy. Like Lot's wife, she looked back on Sodom and Gomorrah longingly for the life she once had as God was destroying the cities for their abominations (Genesis 19:26). Hebrews 12:1 says, "Therefore since we also have such a great cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let's rid ourselves of every obstacle and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let's run with endurance the race that is set before us." If our repentance is too shallow, it is easy to get entangled again. We must hate the sin that so easily entraps us, and with the help of the Holy Spirit using the saints' examples, we can do it. We must remember that the Holy Spirit's conviction will free us. When He identifies our sins, He is there to deliver us. On the other hand, self-condemnation, by its own admission, involves self, dodging the truth that only with the help of the Holy Spirit can we be truly free.
