Last month my sister gave me a 1935 diary she found that my father, Elsworth (Al) Huseby, had written. His first entry records his delight in receiving a new shovel, "heavy but well balanced." Exciting? Probably not. If you find a diary, you often have to wade through the mundane and boring, but those diaries can contain jewels waiting to be discovered about the person and the times in which they lived. To extract these jewels, one has to know what to look for and read them in their historical context.
