This story begins with a Norwegian immigrant family. When the mother passed away, the father took his American-born son, Olaf, back to Norway and remarried. Olaf grew up in Norway and raised his family there. Since Olaf was born in America, all his children were automatically American citizens. One of those children was Ivar Thorsheim Gundersen, founder of Ivar’s Displays. Ivar would become a real Horatio Alger story.
