Lessons My Father Taught Me

Life is an adventure full of challenges that either break or create a person. They can either open doors or, through bitterness, close them. This series of articles is about the challenges I faced and the lessons I learned, often the hard way, in walking with God. How could I walk with a God when I could not see Him, usually could not hear Him, and many times, who had many different ideas than mine, and faced opposing forces on earth and within my very nature to what He was directing?
I was lost and alone in the third week of my first year of college. The large university was intimidating. I knew no one and did not make friends easily. I was also tired of attending a church that did not promote an intimate walk with God. Men and women in the Bible experienced God. I did not have that. I wanted something authentic, and I was seriously contemplating walking away from Him. This was the hippie generation, so options meant drugs, free love, and everything the generation had to offer.
But out of frustration, I told Him one day that I had to have reality or I was done! He knew I was serious. When I saw a sign about a Christian club meeting on campus, I said to Him, “I was going to that meeting and will give you one more chance to meet me before I go my own way. Two days later, He met me at that meeting! I asked Jesus Christ into my life to be my Lord and Savior. Since Jesus did His part, I had to keep my side of the bargain, and that was when the adventure of walking with Him began.
