Torkjel (Torkel/Thomas) Andersson Røysum Huseby, son of Anders Olson Risene Røysum and Brita Torkelsdatter Henjesand, was born in Leikanger on November 21, 1812, Leikanger, Sogn og Fjordane, Norway. Torkjel’s family originated from Risene in Sogndal parish just east of Leikanger. In 1836, he married Maren Jensdatter Vangensteen of Æse on the Øye farm in Lærdal parish, located further up the Sogne Fjord, the longest fjord in Norway.

Maren was born on August 30, 1815, and was the illegitimate daughter of Jens Ovesen Øye and Kristi Johannesdatter Henjum. The Henjum farm is in Leikanger. I understand that Jens Oveson Øye was considered a worthless man who married another woman the year after he got Kristi Henjum, Maren’s mother, pregnant.
