Happy anniversary to all our Norwegian family and friends. May 17th or Syttende Mai is always special, but this year Norway celebrated the 200th anniversary of its constitution. Only the United States has an older constitution in continuous existence. (The French actually had an older one than the Norwegians, but their current one is their fifth.) But Norway's democratic traditions have ancient roots tracing back to Viking times. As discussed in a previous article on "Tings," the people elected kings and rulers. In fact, England's landmark Magna Carta, protecting a freeman's rights from the king's whims, had roots in Viking traditions.
