This year is significant since Norwegian Americans will commemorate both significant bicentennial and centennial events. In 1825, the first considerable immigration of Norwegians occurred, which would trigger the migration of over 800,000 Norwegians to America over the next century. As a result, more than 4.5 million Americans claim Norwegian ancestry today. In perspective, Norway has a population of only 5.5 million people. Most of them settled in the upper Midwest, the Pacific Northwest, California, and Brooklyn, New York. Norwegian Americans have played a vital part in American history.
