They had us laugh. Sometimes they made us angry or even cry. They often provoked us to think, evaluate, and even change our attitudes, behavior, and mores. They provided a commentary on our American culture's political, social, religious, and sacred traditions. They are cartoonists and very much part of the American way of life.
Cartoonists often had different agendas and, for that reason, different audiences. So when we think of Henry, Betty Boop, Charlie Brown, and Bart Simpson, we see nothing in common. But, however diverse as they may seem, they had one thing in common. Each was created by a Norwegian American cartoonist.
