What is a Fjord? NAC-89

The first four things I think of Norway are Vikings, stave churches, the midnight sun, and fjords. A friend of mine recently asked me, “What is a fjord?” and I was surprised that I had never written about that topic. I hope that this article answers his question.

Fjords are U-shaped, often narrow inlets that stretch inland from the sea, often surrounded by steep cliffs or slopes created by melting glaciers. As majestic as fjords are with their high cliffs and narrow passageways, fjords are often deeper than their walls are high. The deepest fjord is the Skelton Inlet in Antarctica, which is over a mile deep.
