Agnes (Haakinson) and Darrell Kendall

Agnes Hazel Haakinson Kendall, the second child of Abel and Synneva Haakinson, was born on a farm near Radcliffe, Iowa, on August 29, 1913.

Like the rest of her siblings, Agnes did not speak much English when she entered school; however, she was a little ahead of the rest. When Hank went to school in the first grade, Agnes tagged along behind him just to learn English. Hank went to a school that was a little farther away because they had a Norwegian teacher named Carrie Skovig. She was able to help the young Norwegian children learn English because she was bilingual.
