Selma Alida Haakinson Thoreson, second daughter and third child of Abel and Synneva Haakinson, was born on a farm near Radcliffe, Iowa, on August 3, 1916. She was baptized a few days later because of health reasons. Her earliest recollections of her father were that he was a kind and gentle man. At age three, he tried to teach Selma how to milk a cow. Their mother spoke only Norwegian; the children spoke the language until they went to school.
