Bernice (Haakinson) and Elsworth Huseby

Writer's picture: Nelson HusebyNelson Huseby

Bernice Arlene Haakinson, the youngest child of Abel and Synneva Haakinson, was born on a farm near Radcliffe on May 10, 1918.

Agnes vividly recalled that when Bernice was only a week old, a tornado was spotted heading toward the Haakinson farm. Abel picked Bernice up, grabbed Agnes and Selma, and went straight for the outside cellar. Synneva had Hank help her close all the windows before they also hurried to the storm cellar. As the storm passed over them, Agnes still remembers her father praying, “God save us!” After it was safe, they left the cellar and found that everything but their house had been destroyed.
