Several family ancestors served in the Civil War, all on the side of the North. In my research of these families, I found that, like all wars, the Civil War significantly impacted the soldiers, their families, and even the following generations. Some veterans were inspired to greatness; others suffered from post-traumatic stress disorders, which we have come to understand better after the Vietnam War. One of these veterans was Amos Peter Miller. When Amos was asked if he had ever killed a man, his eyes lit up with tears. Like most war veterans, he rarely talked about the war years.
