Christopher Avery was born in Cornwall County, England, in 1590. He is believed to be the son of Christopher and Joanna Avery of Torbryan. Torbryan is a tiny village located seven miles inland from the coastal town of Torquay. About August 26, 1616, Christopher Jr. married Margery Stephens at Ippelpen, Devonshire, England. Ippelpen is a village today of about 2,500 people, a mile east of Torbryan. Christopher was a kersey weaver who worked with course woolen fabric.
