Baby Names and Surnames NAC-144

Ten years ago, I included the top baby names in both Norway and the United States. I thought it would be fun to see the changes.

Did you know that there are over five million surnames in America? Determining the most common Norwegian surnames is problematic for several reasons. Patronymic (son/sen) names can be Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, Scottish, and English. Even some of them could be African Americans because they adopted their English slaveowner's names. I have asterisked if a significant percentage (greater than 20%) are African Americans. So one cannot isolate those surnames. Nonetheless, I thought including Americans with patronymic names would be interesting. I did not include names such as Jackson, Gibson, Garrison, etc., which have strictly or mostly English or Scottish origins. I have included some that would not be found in Norway because immigration officials may have Anglicized the name.
