Cooper Family MC No. 99

This story begins with Sir John Cooper of Pawlett, a small village in Somerset, England. Sir John was born in 1552 in Pawlett, Somerset, where his father (Sir Richard John de Cooper) had served as the paymaster in King Henry VIII’s service. During his lifetime, Sir John acquired nearly 7,000 acres of land in Somerset and Hampshire, including the purchase of the Rockbourne estate, just before he passed away. He was a soldier and served two years as a member of Parliament (1584-1586), representing Whitechurch in Hampshire. He also was a knight. His wife was Lady Martha Margaret, daughter of Anthony Skutt and Gertrude Gilbert of Somerset. She passed away on June 5, 1610, in London, England. He passed away five months later, on November 24, 1610, in either London or Whitchurch, England.
