Copy of NAC-162 Svalbald Global Seed Vault

For a small nation, Norway is at the forefront of many innovative and preservation efforts. This includes the Svalbard Global Seed Vault. In 1984, the Nordic Gene Bank (NordGen) began storing Nordic plant germplasm with frozen seeds. Germplasm is genetic resources such as seeds, tissues, and DNA sequences. It is used for animal and plant breeding and conservation efforts. The bank is located in an abandoned coal mine on the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen in the Arctic Ocean. The site is ideal because of its isolated location and frigid weather, since preservation requires below-zero temperatures to support seed preservation.
