Nathan Parmater Diary Pt 2 MCF-24

Writer's picture: Nelson HusebyNelson Huseby

We begin this second part of Nathan’s diary after his thirty-day furlough. He is now in Alexandria, Virginia, on July 24, 1862. “… as my Governor’s request for my release [from service to be a recruiter] has not reached the Regiment, I think that my chance of getting away is rather slim and another thing makes it still worse, we received marching orders, and that is to go today, but the day has worn away and we will probably not go until tomorrow. We cannot learn where we are going but are afraid South.”[1] His Regiment was aroused at four in the morning the next day, then had to wait until six at night to hop on the train for what he thought was Manassas Junction. Instead, when we disembarked, they found themselves in Warrenton, Virginia.
