Henry (Hank) Benhart Haakinson, the oldest child and only son of Abel and Synneva Haakinson, was born on a farm near Randall, Iowa, on October 30, 1911. He was baptized on December 24, 1911, at the Lutheran Church in Randall. The family soon moved to a farm near Radcliffe, Iowa. Like the rest of the children in the family, Henry spoke only Norwegian when he started at a country school. He was fortunate to have a teacher who spoke Norwegian and English. His father died when Henry was ten years old. The family moved into Radcliffe where Henry continued his education, graduating there from high school.
