Joe Runyan, Iditarod NAC-86

Writer's picture: Nelson HusebyNelson Huseby

Occasionally, I find a relative who has excelled in a field I know nothing about. This was the case with Joe Runyan, my third cousin once removed from the Fedje lineage. He was born in Oregon, raised in Idaho, and moved to Alaska after graduating from Oregon State University in 1970 with a degree in zoology. Upon moving to Central Alaska, he got interested in mushing (dog sledding) while trapping on the Yukon and Tanana Rivers in an area west of Fairbanks. As a result, he began listening on the radio to the Iditarod races held annually in Alaska. His interest caused him to enter and win the Yukon Quest race in 1985, the Alpirod race in Europe in 1988, and the Iditarod race in 1989. In winning the Iditarod Race, he ended a three-year winning streak of Susan Butcher. Runyon is the only person to have ever won all three races.
