I am always surprised at what I discover about our heritage. But none more than the subject of this article. My wife has deep roots in our nation, having her earliest ancestor arrive on the second boat after the Mayflower landed on Plymouth Rock. Unsurprisingly, she was related to several presidents, including President Bushes, Ulysses Grant, and William Howard Taft. Recently, I found that George Washington had Viking roots, but I never expected to be related to an American president. Yes, Norwegian-American Walter Mondale and Hubert Humphrey came close to becoming presidents, serving as vice presidents. Still, we are talking about a president being my distant cousin. If discoveries occur, who cares about one’s political leanings? They are family.
