Old Norse was a Germanic language spoken in Scandinavia during the Viking Age, petering out in the 14th century. Wherever the Vikings settled, they took their language with them. It eventually evolved into Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, and Icelandic, plus the language of the Faroe Islands. (Note: Finland is often referred to as being part of Scandinavia, but their language is totally different, evolving from the Ural Mountains area of Russia.)
It is my understanding that Norwegian pronunciation is close to Swedish, but its vocabulary is similar to Danish. But both evolved from Old Norse.
