My interest in genealogy started when my mother-in-law said that her ancestor was a minuteman. As a lover of early American history, I wanted to know more about his story and role in the American Revolution. There were a couple of surprises along the way, but this story about him circles back to my beginning as a genealogist.

Nathan Stone was born on August 9, 1746, in Rutland, Massachusetts. His parents were Nathan Stone and Mary Robbins, who were raised in Lexington and moved to the frontier town of Rutland fifty miles to the west after marriage. Nathan Jr. was twelve when his father died in the French and Indian War. While he had two older sisters, he was the oldest boy and must have had to grow up fast as the head of the household.
