Writer's picture: Nelson HusebyNelson Huseby

This story is much shorter than most of my biographies, but Nathaniel Oak had some interesting experiences worth retelling. His origins are sketchy, except he was probably born in England. He may have been the son of John and Elizabeth (Harrison) Oak. However, family tradition says that his family was originally Welsh. He was born in about 1645 and sailed toward America as a cabin boy when he was in his teens. On its way to Boston sometime between 1660 and 1665, his ship began to flounder about nine miles from shore and sank. Fortunately, Nathaniel was a great swimmer and the only crew member that made it to shore. He arrived hungry and exhausted on the shore, now foreign to him.
