It is wintertime, and in Norway, there are many places where the sun never rises. Darkness envelops the entire countryside along with its fjords and mountains. Even its cities are not spared. It is a time when children's imaginations run wild and ancient superstitions grab hold of even the most rational men and women. Coming home from school in the dark, children could hear strange noises in the bushes and feel howling winds biting at their backs. The Norwegian forests and isolated farms became filled with the noises of actual and fictitious creatures. At this time of year, you must be careful, or you might offend a nisse or encounter a troll.
