The last two biographies discussed the Updike family. This biography continues with the biography of Richard Smith, husband of Catherine Updike. Unfortunately, little information exists about his life in England before coming to New England. That is partly because Smith is such a common name. He was probably born in Thornbury, Gloucestershire, England. Some people believe that he was born in 1596. If so, Richard was the brother of Catherine Smith Updike, not his father. On May 28, 1621, he married Joan Barton at the Thornbury Church. One genealogist has tried to tie this family to Captain John Smith of Jamestown. However, John Smith never married and did not have any children.
