William Bassett II, the oldest son of William Basset I and his wife, Elizabeth, was born in 1624 in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Like his father, he was a blacksmith. He married Mary Raynesford, daughter of Deacon Edward Raynesford of Boston. He moved to Sandwich on Cape Cod in 1651 and is listed as one of the first recorded landowners in the town. In 1643, he and his father were listed as two who could bear arms from Duxbury when tensions began to rise with local Native Americans.
