Every nation seems to have national folk costumes that showcase the talents of local seamstresses. Norway is no exception. However, in Norway, that costume, a bunad (boo-nad), varies significantly from region to region. In fact, you can often tell where a person was raised simply based on the design of their bunad. A woman's bunad includes a skirt, a blouse, an apron and vest, and sometimes a headpiece often worn by a married woman. A girl usually receives her first grown-up bunad when she is confirmed in the State church at 14 or 15. The bunad can be let out should the person gain weight over the years. The preferred method is to make it themselves or with their mother or inherit it. If it were custom-made, a bunad today would cost between $2,000 and $10,000 if all the pieces were included. Men have their version of the bunad, as you can see in the picture on the next page, which is gaining popularity. New styles of bunads have to be approved.
