Note: For a century, it was believed that Thomas Dewey lived in Sandwich, Kent, England, before immigrating to America. However, things never truly added up until 2017, when Terry Dewey, a family researcher, found that in the 1600s, there was a Sandwich in Dorset County, and records of Thomas' birth were discovered there. Part of the problem was that the name of Sandwich, Dorset, was changed to Swanage, creating challenges for family researchers.

The original Dewey family came to England from France during the Norman conquest in 1066. According to the family stories, they originated from Douai, near Lille in Normandy. Douai is now a city of 40,000, but the site was once a Roman fortress known as Duacum. It is located in Flanders, and during the Middle Ages, it was a prosperous textile market center.
