The Halsey family were lords of the Manor of Lanesley in 1266. The manor is now located in the village of Gulval (formerly known as Lanesley), on southwest England’s westernmost tip of Cornwall County. The manor is a short distance from the historic St. Michael’s Mount. St. Michael’s Mount is the site of a fifteenth-century chapel, but its religious usage dates back to perhaps the 8th century. Legends abound, as one can imagine, including one where an 18-foot giant named Cormoran lived in a cave on the island. He kept his treasures there from the people he terrorized in the towns along the coast. His reign of terror ended when a local farmer’s son named Jack slew the giant by trapping him in a concealed pit. He cut off the giant’s head, and the legend was born and now known as Jack the Giant Killer. You may be more familiar with his exploits as Jack and the Bean Stock.
