Tobias Saunders MC No. 95

Writer: Nelson HusebyNelson Huseby

This is a continuation of the Burdick story which I told last month. The Westerly, Rhode Island, ancestors are so intertwined with each other. But each line needs its own version of the story.

Tobias (Toby) Saunders was the first of his lineage to immigrate to the American colonies. There is much uncertainty as to who his ancestors were. Some have tried to connect him to the Saunders of Amersham, Buckinghamshire, England; however, there is not enough data for me to substantiate that. This is primarily due to the absence of his birth year. He was born sometime between 1620 and 1625. We do know that he was a resident of Taunton, Massachusetts in August 1643. He was listed as one who qualified to perform military service in the Plymouth Colony Company Rolls. That means he had to be between 16 to 60 years old to be on that list.
