Tornadoes NAC-6

Writer's picture: Nelson HusebyNelson Huseby

On May 21, 1918, a strong tornado struck outside of Radcliffe, Iowa.In the path of the tornado was the farm of Grandpa Abel Thormodsæter Haakinson. My mother was only eleven days old. When Grandpa and Grandma saw the tornado heading toward them, Grandpa grabbed my mom and her sisters as Grandma and her son, Henry, closed all the windows in the house. Then all ran to the outside cellar just before the tornado struck.Years later, my aunt, who was only five years old, remembered the howling of the wind, the cellar doors rattling and her dad crying out to God to save them. They discovered their barn was destroyed when it was over, but their house was still standing. This story was recalled in the Haakinson Family History book.
