It may be a town of only about 900 people, but Twin Valley was an important town in the history of the Huseby family. You may know of little towns in the Midwest, where time has often tried to forget, but they were the backbone of America in its formative stages. In Norman County in northwest Minnesota, Twin Valley is located east of the fertile Red River Valley and only 125 miles (200 kilometers) south of the Canadian border. My great-great-grandparents moved there to be near their son, Jens, who farmed in Home Lake Township and are now buried in the Wild Rice Cemetery in Twin Valley. So what was it like living in Twin Valley? Being born in Los Angeles, and raised in its suburbs, my only sense of what life was like was living and raising my children in Clovis, California, for thirty years. When we moved there in the early seventies, it was a town of 10,000. However, by the time we had left, it had become a suburb of Fresno and had swelled to over 70,000, so my experience was short-lived and limited.
