Walter John Palmer MC No. 91

Writer's picture: Nelson HusebyNelson Huseby

The Palmer surname probably originated from the Crusades when their ancestors traveled to the Holy Lands in the 1100s. When they returned, they bore palm branches as symbols of their visits. Therefore, they were called palm bearers or Palmers.

Walter John Palmer was born in about 1585, probably in Frampton, Dorsetshire, England. There is also a belief that it may have been Yetminster, twenty miles to the north, but the latest research supports Frampton. Today, Frampton is a village of about 500 people located five miles northeast of Dorchester in southwest England.
