William Decker MCF-34

William Decker has eluded many researchers for a long time. I am not sure I will be able to solve their puzzle, but I thought I would attempt to give as much information as I can about this man and his family. We are indebted to Betty Wier, Thor Springer, Tom Maksimchuk, and Helena Beers Buechner for much of the research regarding the Decker family.

The interesting but sad story of William Decker begins with much speculation. Where and when he was born is not certain. He was believed to be born in southern New York sometime between 1796 and 1802. Although often unreliable, his death certificate would place his birth on May 9, 1796, but his tombstone says he was born in 1800. So he was between 88 and 92½ when he passed away. Without knowing his birth date, it is difficult, if not impossible, to sort through the 164 Decker families in southern New York in 1800.
