1,000 Year Moster Church Anniversary NAC-154

Writer's picture: Nelson HusebyNelson Huseby

My cousin, Inge Johansen, alerted me on Facebook that this year marks the 1000th anniversary of the Mosterhamn church’s role in converting Norway to Christianity. The church is located on the island of Moster in the Bømlo Municipality. (My grandfather, Abel Haakinson, was born and raised on nearby Bømlo Island.)

King Olav Tryggvason built a church at Mosterhamn (often referred to as Moster) in 996 when Christianity was first introduced in Norway. The anniversary itself commemorates a “thing” or “ting” held there in 1024 by King Olav II (St Olav). He passed a law officially converting the kingdom of Norway to Christianity at that “thing” there.
