After traveling through Norway in 2005, I wondered why over three-quarters of a million Norwegians would ever want to leave their beautiful homeland and mostly settle in the Midwest. Not that the Midwest doesn’t have some appeal, but especially settling on the Dakota plains was a drastic change for the Norwegians. They often lived in sod houses a mile or more away from their nearest neighbor and even farther away from the nearest town. Life had to be challenging at best. But what made this change attractive to so many immigrants? Of course, the most excellent magnet was the promise of owning land and lots of it!
