In the last article, I wrote about George Stillman’s wife (Jane Pickering) and her ancestors. In this article, we turn our attention to George. George was born in 1654 in Steeple Ashton in Wiltshire, England, sixteen miles southeast of the famous town of Bath in the southwestern part of the country. Before the dissolution of the monasteries during the Protestant Reformation, Steeple Abbey was a manor of the Romsey Abbey, located yet another 43 miles to the southeast. Steeple may not have meant an actual church steeple but indicated a market town, confirmed by the market cross in the village square. The village church dates to the 13th century, although it has been expanded since then. In 1671, lightning struck the spire killing two workmen. As a result, the spire was never replaced.
