One of the most memorable trips in my lifetime was on the Hurtigruten. This Norwegian coastal steamer has traveled daily up the coast for the past 130 years. Hurtigruten literally means “the fastest route” or the express route. With the rugged coastline of Norway, the northern towns were isolated from the rest of Norway. Before the Hurtigruten, mail would take three weeks to be delivered in the summer from Trondheim in central Norway to Hammerfest in the north. In the winter, it would take five weeks. The coastal steamer reduced that time to 41 hours. In addition to mail, the locals would also use it to travel up and down the coast.
