St. Sunniva and the Norwegian Saints NAC-45

Writer: Nelson HusebyNelson Huseby

Whenever my kids were expecting a new child, I had to suggest appropriate names. Oddly, none of my grandchildren ended up with my suggestions. I thought my wife and I had such a rich treasure trove of acceptable family names. I was sure that at least one of them would be carried on by the next generation. For example, my wife's mother was Clella, and her aunts were Arnetha, Merla, Enid, Lenise, and Vernice. If we dug deeper into her history, there was Freelove, Mehitable, Bethiah, Wilbroe, Temperance, and Tamar.

On my side of the family, my grandmother was Synneva. I never liked that name because the first syllable was "sin." So, when I was upset with her as a child, I thought she was aptly named. But my heart softened when I found that she was named after the Norwegian saint, Sunniva (Sun-e-va), with its first syllable changed to "sun."
