As a city planner by trade, I was delighted to find that the hometown of my great grandparents, John and Jensine (Jensen) Nelson, was one of the first planned communities in Europe during the Renaissance period. King Christian IV of Denmark founded Kristiansand in 1641 as a market town. At that time, Norway was part of the Kingdom of Denmark, and the king wanted to foster an economic climate in this strategic location at the southern tip of Norway, the closest point to Denmark with a good harbor.
