The Dickenson Family MCF-60

Writer's picture: Nelson HusebyNelson Huseby

This story begins in France probably with Walter de Caen, who was the half-brother and companion of William the Conqueror. William had begun the construction of the Chateau de Caen in around 1060, and it was given to Walter.

Caen is a city located in the French province of Normandy, about nine miles from the English Channel and about 25 miles southwest of the French port city of Le Havre. Most of Caen, including the remains of the Chateau, were badly damaged during World War II during the Battle of Normandy in 1944. The French government built the Mémorial de Caen to “pay tribute to the martyred city of the liberation.” Opened on the 44th anniversary of the D-Day in World War II in 1988, the museum is dedicated to both war and peace.
