Writer's picture: Nelson HusebyNelson Huseby

This family story begins In Shropshire County, England, the least populated county in England, located on the border of Wales. It was there that Reverend Ralph Wheelock was born in 1600. In 1623, he was admitted to Clare College, which is part of Cambridge University and was founded in 1326. It is the second oldest of the 31 colleges that make up the university. Upon his acceptance, he was a sizar, which meant that he received maintenance aid from the college for his education. Ralph received his bachelor’s degree in 1626-27 and his master’s in 1631. He was ordained as a deacon in 1629. Classmates included John Milton, author of the epic poem Paradise Lost, and John Eliot, missionary and known as the apostle to the American Indians.
