Art is an expression of freedom and wealth. Therefore, it is not surprising the spiritual awakening caused by the Reformation 500 years ago this year and the cultural awakening of the Renaissance should result in an explosion of artistic expression. The Reformation greatly impacted Norway, but because of its poverty, lack of independence, and artistic expression was protracted until the nation adopted its Constitution in 1805 and gained its independence from Denmark. In a previous article, I noted that Norwegians had limited access to educational opportunities under Denmark's rule. It was felt in the realm of art.
