The ancient origin of the Francis family is France; however, this branch emigrated from England. Unfortunately, there is no record of when that happened.
Robert Francis was born in England in 1629, possibly in Norwich in Norfolk County. We do not know when he actually arrived in America, but the earliest records found him here were in 1645. That would make him 16 years old. Some speculate that he came as an adventurer rather than fleeing for religious reasons. He settled in Wethersfield, Connecticut, the oldest town in that state, which was founded twelve years before Robert arrived. It was believed that Robert was urged to come to the area to defend the village from Native American attacks and seemed willing to accept the challenge. It is also believed that he arrived in America with his uncle, Richard, and his brother, Richard. Since there is no record of his brother settling down, it is highly likely that he was killed by Native Americans, probably the aggressive Pequod tribe, involved in several rampages during the early years of settling in New England. Interestingly, Wethersfield was first settled at the request of Wha-Quinaset, a sachem (chief), who was hoping to ally himself with the colonists to protect his people from the Pequods.
